Injection sclerotherapy is a popular form of treatment for both doctors and patients. It is most effective when used to treat small veins (less than 5 mm in diameter), making it especially common as a treatment for spider veins. The procedure involves injecting a pharmaceutical liquid or foam solution into the vein, causing the vessel’s walls to swell, adhere, and seal shut. Blood is automatically directed to healthier vessels, and the treated vein gradually becomes scar tissue. Anesthesia is not necessary during sclerotherapy, but this treatment is associated with a higher recurrence rate compared to other minimally invasive treatments. It is also less effective on larger veins and may require several treatments to completely resolve the problem. Most patients are able to return to their daily activities soon after treatment.
