Varicose veins are often noticed first due to their discolored appearance and bulging, twisted nature. Varicosities bulge in this way due to pressure caused by pooling blood. These veins may go unnoticed for some time.

A varicose vein can become symptomatic, potentially leaving patients with a host of other symptoms. Some patients notice a feeling of heaviness or a dull ache in their legs. This sensation may be followed by swollen legs and feet, a sense of restlessness in the legs, cramps, and an itchy or irritated rash on the legs or ankles. The area around the abnormal vein may feel numb or tender to the touch.

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, but tend to be much smaller and more superficial.
